6-21-2012
We are in Fredericksburg, VA. It has been in the high 90's the last two days. Last night we had the pleasure of having Ana Jo  and Jeff come out to the camp ground for dinner. Judy fixed Tofu for Ana Jo and steak for the rest of us, We also had sweet corn and baked potatoes. Th e dinner was good and the company was excellent.. We very much enjoyed talking to the Karp's. They will be moving to Richmond this weekend. We would love to stay and help but we have to get to Gettysburg. From there we are going to Lancaster, PA to see the Amish Country. From there we are going to Quaker Town, PA. We will go visit Philadelphia from there. We will also go up to Bethlehem to see Judy's family. Then on Saturday we will go to Judy's brother's house for the family reunion.

Wednesday we toured historic Fredericksburg.  We visited the old churches, the historic museum, a Confederate cemetery, Mary Washington's home, an apothecary, an old tavern and many other places. I talked the guide to let me go into the cellar at the old tavern. In the cellar you could see some of the original floor, the original beams and other original timbers. The tavern does have ghosts but we didn't get to see any.

Today we toured the battle fields around Fredericksburg. Some of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War were fought in the area. The union suffered the heaviest casualties. The city was a very busy port with a lot of trade going on before the war. Being located midway between the Northern Capital and the Southern Capital is was a key target in the war. There are still a few or the original buildings and the a signs of the damage from cannon balls and musket fire. We visited over two dozen battle sites today over a distance of about 30 miles. There are still remains of the trenches that were used by the soldiers for protection during the battles.

Needless to say after two days of walking in the high heat we are both exhausted. We have had dinner and done some of the packing to pull out in the morning for Gettysburg. We have the car loaded, the grill and outside carpet put away as well as the table and chairs. From this point we can be on the road in about 30 minutes after we finish our coffee.
