If you look at the pictures of the battlefield that shows the Confederate picket line in the foreground, look about 300 yards across the field and you can see some tall grass which is where the Union picket line was. The Confederate Fort is behind me and the Union Fort is on the hillside you can see in the top of the picture. This gives you an idea how close the two sides were. They could shoot cannon balls from one fort to the other. They didn't use solid cannon balls, they used cannon balls that exploded when they landed .
