On July 17th we drove north to Scarborough, ME. This town is south of Portland. We stayed at Bayley's Campground. This is a very large campground with two pools and a cafe. The cafe had a special, two whole lobsters, a pound of steamers and an ear of corn for $19. We quickly got two orders to go and went back to the RV for a feast. They were delicious, in fact we had them again on our third night there.
The next day we visited Portland. We visited the Head Light lighthouse which is the oldest lighthouse in Maine, It was built by George Washington. We also saw three other lighthouses. We visited an old cemetery. We toured the Fire Museum and chatted with an elderly gentleman who had been in the fire service for over 40 years. They had a video showing horse drawn fire equipment leaving fire stations. They had found the film when they were tearing down a fire station 30 years ago. They saved it all this time an recently had the old film put on a CD.
We then drove up to Freeport to visit the LL Bean store. Of course we had to buy a few things.
The next day we drove north of Freeport to Bath, ME. to visit the Maine Maritime Museum which is next door to the site of the Percy and Small Ship Yard. Percy and Small built wooden schooners from the late 1800's to 1920. The built the largest wooden schooner ever built in this country. It was the Wyoming which was 450 feet long and was built to haul coal up and down the East coast. We took a cruise on the river past the Bath Iron Works were they build Navy destroyers. We also toured the museum.
We left the next day for the Black Bear Campground in Salisbury, MA. The next day we drove down to Salem to learn about the Salem witch Trials. I will cover Salem in the next post because there is much to talk about.
I will post the pictures in the next few days.
