These photos start at the Percy and Small Shipyard. This company built large wooden schooners from 1893 until 1920. The largest was a six masted schooner, the Wyoming. The large white metal frames represent the bow and stern in the location where it was built. This was the largest ship ever built in this country. It was built in 1909. It was built at a cost of $165,000, paid for after a year of hauling coal. Percy and Small sold the schooner after 4 years for $365,000.They made a lot of money with this and other large schooners they built.
All the buildings are original. The only building not there today is the blacksmith shop. The site stood abandoned for 30 years so it is amazing that all the buildings and equipment remained. You can research them on line if you are interested.
The Bath Iron Works photos were taken from the boat when we went on a cruise on the river. It is 10 miles down the river to the ocean. The red hull seen in several photos is a destroyer under construction. There are some pictures of a destroyer at the dock where it is being completed.
You will see some pictures of a pole with a platform on top and a pine tree with a platform. When the were building the new bridge over the river there was a nest of Osprey on the bridge. These platforms were built so they would have a place to nest when they returned. Look at the picture of the large light pole, enlarge it and you will see two Osprey in the nest.
