We have visited Birmingham and Mongomery Alabama. Birmingham was not to interesting. The campground we stayed at was mostly workers and was a littlerough but it served our purpose. The two most interesting places we visited were in Montevello, Alabama. The virst one was a place called American Village which is a reconstruction of historic areas such as the oval office, part of the White House and the President's house. There was a guided tour through each area explainng the history. The village is built to educate school children and adults about American History. Each of the areas is a reproduction of the original space. They have many things still being constructed.
The second area we visited was Tinglewood Park which is a nice park in Montevello. The interesting thing in the park was all the wood carvings that have been done on dead trees. You can see these in the attached pictures.
We didn't spend much time in Birminghamas we were not interested in the civil rights things and the city was a little scary. We did visit a place called Sloss Furance which is an old ironore making facility. They had a self guided tour which we tried to follow but they were in the middle of setting up for their haunted house attraction so the tour was hard to follow. You can see the large old equipment in the pictures.
We then traveled south to Montgomery. We toured the Alabama Capital which was very nice. We also toured the first confederate whitehouse which had anumber of original artifacts from Jefferson Davis. We walked around downtown and looked at other historical places. The downtown streets had almost no trafffic and it was Wednesday afternoon. It felt a little strange although the area was occuppied with many goverment buildings.
We had gotten a parking permit from the visitors center which allowed us to park near the capital. When we got back to the car we had gotten a parking ticket. So we went to the police station and explained what happened. The gentleman was very nice and promised to take care of the ticket the next day.
We couldn't get a reservation for today at the fort pierce campground which is on the Gulf south of Pensicola until tomorrow so we are spending the day catching up. Both dogs got a bath. We will leave in the morning for Florida.
