Trip continuing from 9-15-2014

9-29-2014

Today we are still in Holbrook, Utah. We had a terrible thunderstorm last night so it was cool and cloudy today. We spent most of the day finishing our taxes. Now to pick upon our travels where we left off.

9-14-2014

We were still in Moab and spent the day driving on off road trails and took a drive to the top of a high mesa. Pictures were included in the last post.

9-15-2014

We drove from Moab Utah to Cortez  Colorado.Moab was at elevation 4300 and Cortez is at 6891 feet. As you can imagine climbing 2500 feet in 111 miles involved some pretty good hills.

9-16-2014

We took a bus tour through Mesa Verde National Park. The drive through the park on the bus included some steep narrow roads. We stopped on the tour and hiked down to the remains of a cliff dwelling. The trail consisted of steep narrow uneven steps and a narrow trail. To get back up we had to climb 3 old wooden ladders.

9-17-2014

We drove north out of town toward Telluride then turned on to a road that went up into the mountains. The first few miles were paved, then gravel for a couple of miles. The next 25 miles was dirt. The majority of the dirt road was not much wider than one car. There was many tight turns and the road was steep going to the top which was over 10,000 feet. Needless to say it was a steep climb down. But it was a great 4 x 4 trip.

Cortez

9-18-2014

We drove from Cortez to Durango, Colorado. This was only a 48 mile trip so we had time to visit Durango in the afternoon. Durango is a good sized town with lots of restaurants and shops. Of course every park we were in had a gift shop.  Cannot imagine how much time we spent in the shops.Judy always shopped for a new charm in each location. They are hard to find in the national Parks but they do have small commemorative coins that can be made into a charm.

9-19-2014

We rode the Durango - Silverton train from Durango to Silverton. The train ride was about 3 hours each way. We spent an hour and a half in Silverton. There isn't much there except restaurants and shops. The train ride was amazing as the tracks are on a narrow ledge on the side of the mountain. There were unbelievable views along the way. There are many pictures of the train ride and the steam locomotive.

9-20-2014

We toured the train museum , visited an art fair that was going on. We had lunch in a nice sports bar.

Durango

9-21-2014

We drove from Durango to Bluff Utah. Along the way we stopped at the 4 corners which is where Utah, Colorado,New Mexico and Arizona come together. There is a steel plate in the middle of a large plaza. Since this is in Navajo country they have booths all around the plaza where they sell beads, jewelry and other things they make.

Four Corners

We will continue with Bluff in the next post.
