San Antonio and South Padre Island

3/1/2015

Well we spent two days in San Antonio on our way down to South Padre Island. We saw a great parade in downtown San Antonio in preparation for the Stock Show. They drove Longhorns down the street and there were people riding longhorns. We visited the Alamo, wooden nickel factory and museum, San Juan Mission  and the toilet seat museum. The Alamo was really interesting, everyone should see it. The wooden nickel factory still makes 5 million wooden nickels a year. It was amazing to see samples of some of the nickels they have made over the years. The Mission has a lot of history and the church is beautiful.

We arrived here on the island on the 8th of February. We have had some nice 70 degree days with sunshine and some 45 to 50 degree days with clouds and misty rain. The cold days here are still better than the 3 inches of snow and ice they have had back home. We have managed to get in some fishing. They first day we fished all we caught were "doubles" two fish at the same time. You will see some of hem in the pictures.

Last thursday our friend Keith put on a fish fry for about 65 people here in the park. They fried 350 fish fillets(175 fish) that he and his neighbor have caught here. There was so much food and desserts it was hard to believe.

Last Saturday we went to Cookin On The Rio which is big cook off between teams with all sizes and shapes of smokers. Judy and i judged fajitas and ribs. Judy also judged chicken and i judged beans. I had one team give me a sample of a sort of soup made with alligator and frog. They had caught the alligator and the frogs.

I don't remember if i put it in the last post but i passed the test to get a ham radio technician license. When I got here I found out that they offered the test for the general class license in Brownsville the next Saturday so i spent a lot of time the first week studying for the test we i did pass.  So now have acquired a new ham radio. I built an antenna before we came down so I put that up to use with my hand held unit i got before e came down. Now I have another one since I can now talk on a lot more frequencies. This one is on top of a 20 ft pole and the antenna is 23 feet long so it sticks way above the motor home. I did manage to talk to someone in Bulgaria last week.

Well thats about it for now.
