While we were camping in Winslow we spent the first day catching up on laundry and other tasks and it had rained really hard the night before so the weather was cool and wet.

We visited the Petrified Forest and the Painted Dessert with Russ and Nancy, who had been with us on the tour. The petrified trees were amazing. The were created millions of years ago when they were buried  The minerals from the water they were in when they were buried got into the cells of the wood and over time turned to rock. The trees look like they were cut but they really broke after being petrified. They sell all types of rocks and petrified wood at the local stores. They cut slabs from the trees, polish it and make things such as tables. We saw one for $22,000. The painted dessert was very pretty but from thepark you can only see a small portion of it.

We drove to Meteor Crater. It is on private land owned by the descendents of the man who originally investigated the crater and proved it was created by a meteor. The visitor's center is very nice had has a lot of information about meteors. On the way back we stopped in Winslow to see the corner from the Eagle's song "Take It Easy".
